now that it’s been nearly three weeks without a kitchen I thought i’d update you all on progress… or lack of… lordy, why is it that, with best intensions, these things seem to drag on and on..? and there’s always something that gets in the way… a little bit of rising damp here… a hidden chimney stack there… a burst water-pipe… a jumble of ancient wiring in the ceiling… a wrongly ordered door… and no hidden box of gold buried in the floor…!
… just to keep you in the loop, the idea was to remove the back wall of the house, where the kitchen is, and extend a new room out into the garden, creating a large kitchen/diner. We live in an old brick cottage with a slate roof and whilst there are no restrictions on the building itself, the village we live in is part of an ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ and therefore all building work needs to be sympathetic to the style of buildings we’re surrounded by and cannot infringe on the countryside in a negative way… not that we had plans to build a glass and steel monolith or anything… but just so you know…

beautiful!! i've always said that when it comes to a house i'd rather go for a gorgeous and large kitchen than a bedroom! the folding doors look so wonderful! part of that indoors/outdoors feel!!

From Beyond My Kitchen Window says
Well worth the wait. I love the folding doors. It is going to seem like you are dining in the garden. Over here in New England we have Indian summer, which means very warm days in in the fall. Here's hoping you have many days of Indian Summer this fall so the folding doors may remain open. LOVE IT!!!

I agree with all the others – the double door out into the garden is a great idea and will be a lovely feature in the finished kitchen. Hope there's still time to enjoy it this year!

Cooking in the kitchen before the end of the month sounds hopeful or will the cooking come before the painting and all the other little finishing off bits?
I'll not be showing that post to my good lady wife – she really really wants a kitchen with doors like that. It's looking good.

It's looking really promising to me. You'll soon forget the pain of the building work. It could be worse, the builder who did our kitchen found bones under an extension he was putting in (not ours!). The place was decalred a crime site until someone pointed out days later that they were animal bones.
Vanessa Kimbell says
Flipping brilliant ! It's going to be so light. You'll spend so much time in there!! It's fabulous !!!!

Glad you are still sane, remember the noise and mess of our kitchen being done and all the delays due to various things the builders came up with!
Not long to go now, look forward to seeing piccies of the new kitchen!

I have so enjoyed your current and some past postings.
Love the wall removal, the new light, and the way the kitchen melts into the garden and vice-a-versa.
You probably do need to find a pot of gold right about now, but in the end it is all so worth it!
Great design,

Bet you cant wait for it to be finished, all that light will be fab place to work.

You are going to have the sexiest kitchen ever! We wanted to extend ours, but the cost of sorting out everything else that they find to correct (we needed rendering taking off and re-doing, new damp proof courses and an exterior wall having an extra skin added) meant we couldn't afford it. Want to see yours when finished!
Magnolia Verandah says
I must admit I am a bit of a reno-holic and yours looks like such a good one. I am so excited and its not even mine, bet you can't wait to get in – a new kitchen what could be better!
